Sports Medicine | Boynton Beach, FL
Primary Care Sports Medicine is a medical subspecialty available to both MD’s and DO’s. It is a one year non-surgical fellowship that can be undertaken after a full primary care residency is completed and requires successful completion of a Fellowship and a written Board exam. Its medical focus is in the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.
A common misconception is that you have to be an athlete to see a Sports Medicine physician. With the goal of returning an athlete to play after an injury, Sports Medicine physicians are especially skilled in returning non-athletes to activity without surgery as well. For example, a young mother with Mommy’s Thumb (De Quervain’s tenosynovitis) from pushing a stroller has the same desire and need to return to pain free activity as a professional athlete.
Conditions treated by a sports medicine specialist:
- Non-surgical orthopedic injuries
- Tendon/ligament/muscle injuries
- Exercise induced osteoporosis (female triad)
- Exercise prescriptions
- Sugar control in exercising diabetics
- Exercise induced asthma
- Return to play protocols
- Protective wear recommendations
- Shin splints
- Compartment syndrome
- Patellar tracking syndrome
- Rotator cuff injuries
